Hiroshi Suzuki - Cat
A deep-bass jazz-funk groove that became a cornerstone of the sample crates.
Liner notes
Cat is a Japanese jazz-funk date from the mid-1970s, cut for the domestic market as the country's session scene absorbed the deep-groove language coming out of American jazz-funk. Hiroshi Suzuki, a trombonist with deep session roots, led a record that collectors would later prize for its low end.
The signature is the bottom: a deep electric bass groove and the warm Rhodes comping that sit at the center of the mix. The horn and rhythm sections stay tight and unhurried, giving the whole record a soft, warm pulse rather than a hard funk snap.
In the underground hip-hop world, Cat became a foundational sample source. Its bass line and Rhodes have been lifted by producers on both sides of the Atlantic, and the record is now a cornerstone of Japanese jazz-funk crate digging.
